My second idea was to use yellow with very little design as the alternating blocks, since every lamb piece has some yellow in it,I thought it would brighten it up a bit, and maybe not look so.....blue and busy.....but now I think it looks a bit over whelming......like too bright!
However, I am going to make a border using these two fabrics and some of the backing fabric as well. I could use the backing fabric it's a dark smaller print with moons, stars and clouds. But I didn't want the front block fabric to be the same as the backing fabric, and I don't have enough of the light blue print for the entire back. I could piece the back using the yellow, dark blue and light blue fabrics, that could work.....I just don't know....if you have any ideas, I welcome them wholeheartedly. I am distraught, since this blanket has been in my head for years, and to find that it doesn't seem to be working out the way I thought it would is sad for me.
Help?

I like the yellow! So bright and cheery. Yes, put a darker border and that will balance it all out for you. It is lovely.
i like the yellow too, very gender friendly either way
Hmm... I agree with your assessment that the yellow is a little too bright. I love the thought of yellow, but I think it ends up too light and too thin. But yes, the blue fabric that you're showing is too busy.. but would have been perfect for the border or for the back.
I would look for another blue, but something just a bit more solid. I'm thinking of a particular tone-on-tone blue that has that "hand-dyed" look. It's a bit more subtle but would still give that "cloud-y" appearance and make your adorable lambs pop! =) Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/10-Hydrangea-Blue-Hand-Dyed-Background/dp/B001G2SZXU
Those lambs are so cute.. you've done such a great job!
I think the yellow showcases your stitched lambies. The blue is definitely too busy but may balance the yellow as a border. I can't wait to see what you decide.
I actually like the yellow.
As for the border I think a light green would look cute.
Having yellow and green on the front with the lambs will make those colors pop out.
As for the back, I think using the moon and stars material with the yellow every other square would look beautiful.
I like the yellow option best, good for either a girl or boy, and so cheerful.
I'm the odd man out and like the blue better - maybe because there is sky behind the lambs on their blocks and it seems to flow together better.
Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog - I would have emailed you back but your email didn't come through.
Congratulations on the baby! As a new mom myself, I know how exciting and wonderful (and a little scary!) it can be, but it's the most rewarding thing I've ever done.
Have you picked a sampler pattern yet?
